The New Paradigm of the Social Study of Childhood sees children as competent social actors. If this perspective was more widely used, how might society benefit?
Think about what it means for children to be considered ‘social competent actors’. What is so
significant about this notion? In the course we have considered again and again the place of the
new paradigm in contrast to other theories, this question demands that you clearly reflect on what
makes the new paradigm different and stand out. You are then invited to illustrate the unique
nature of the new paradigm by presenting examples of ‘how society might benefit’. Again this has
been a consistent theme in lectures as we have sought to examine the possibilities childhood
studies offers to improving outcomes for children’s everyday lives in a range of different social
institutions.
