Explain Porter’s “Analysis of an industry”
Discuss three effects of mass incarceration (these can be individual or society based). Which racial/ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by mass incarceration? Discuss two policies that have been particularly harmful to communities of color (e.g., War on Drugs). Discuss any steps being taken by criminal justice reform to address mass incarceration. Use this website to paraphrase from: https://www.sentencingproject.org/criminal-justice-facts/
choose an American media event from the 1960s. The downside: NONE of us were alive in the 1960s. The upside: There was a tremendous amount of upheaval (and therefore news-worthy events) in that single decade. Let me give a short list from which to consider:
President Kennedy is elected to office
Bay of Pigs invasion/Cuban missile crisis
President Kennedy is assassinated.
His brother, Bobby Kennedy, is assassinated.
Malcolm X is assassinated.
Martin Luther King is assassinated.
Cold War tensions (and nuclear proliferation) escalate.
Astronaut Neil Armstrong walks on the moon.
The U.S. enters the Vietnam Conflict
The Tet Offensive is launched in 1968.
The Beatles and the rest of the “British Invasion” brings rock ’n’ roll to American households.
Watts riots in LA
Civil Rights movement (you could pick a singular event or the movement itself).
The hippie movement (again, pick a singular event, like Woodstock, or the movement itself).
Ushering in of President Johnson’s “Great Society,” which is the precursor to many of today’s social programs.
This list could go on and on and if you’d like to address media coverage of an American event not listed here, you’re more than welcome to do so as long as the event happens in the 1960s.
