Imagine you are a young person (a man, just for convenience’s sake) who wants to be taken seriously as you start out in politics. You have a respectable family history and a good amount of money, but your family has never been very rich or famous. How do you use art to suggest that you (and your family) are honorable, good, and Roman, and that you will be a good politician that people should vote for?

The Republican Period of Roman art is known for verism, or extremely realistic depictions of human faces. This reflects their obsession with service to the state (Rome) and implies a sort of denial of vanity in favor of honoring hard work. However this is also a society with a lot of social mobility, where people can become rich very quickly through business or through warfare (soldiers often got a share of “Spoils” from whatever town they conquered, including gold, slaves, and property), and people were tempted to “show off” their wealth as well as their other types of success.

Write about how narrative artists tell truth through fiction.

is about how narrative artists tell truth through fiction. These great artists are all faithful to their own experience of humanity, so you should be faithful, too, to your experience of what it means to be human. So avoid cliché: copy life, not art or movies.
2. The way to avoid cliché is to develop detail, to look past the general formula and to notice the little particulars which make a scene vividly imaginable, dialogue credible, and a character worth noticing.
3. Limit your scope. The only way to include enough detail is to limit the action to one or two central episodes. Some of you might be tempted to outline plots for a novel. Terrific! Keep them! And keep writing—on into the next semester, and beyond. But for this assignment, you need to focus on a slice. And don’t worry if it feels like a fragment.
. Precision does not limit you to any particular style, of course. Conrad, Austen, Dostoevsky, and Melville all have very different styles, but each word is nonetheless placed where it is for a reason, with a view to its effect upon the reader, and with an ear to the beauty of language itself.

Explain the change to Late Antique style, the loss of “naturalism”, etc, as something that people wanted to do. What is the benefit of having art made in this way?

for a long time, art history scholars assumed that the detail and “quality” of art was tied to economic power and the ability of trained artists to create beautiful things. For example: art of the Late Antique period was often criticized as “bad art”, because during that time period the empire was too disorganized for anyone to properly study, make, or afford good art like in the Classical Period. But today we don’t think that so much: changes in economy and technology do make a different in style, but most of it is down to choice, what people want their art to look like.
