Hobbes State of Nature Notes:   → Levithian Chapter 13: What human nature is like “state of nature”  “Politically organized state” How would we live if we didn’t?   1600-1800  Who may the state legitimately exercise any coercive power at all? Why can’t I just resist if I don’t like it?   What is the extent/limits of the  legitimate state power?   The device itself: Any social construct argument:   Coercive state power is legitimate because each and every individual has reason to consent to live under that state power  Individual consent= justification  If you consent does that justify?  Why do we have reason to believe this?  Never consected to living in this society  If you have problems..  Hypothetical consent. Living in your state and living in anarchy (the state of nature) you would agree to leave in your state because the state of nature is worse  What are the grounds of social construct arguments?  State = justified  What is true ab human beings  Hobbes view: we have  two choices. All or nothing. Absolutist, state power or anarchy. He believes the only rational thing to do is to leave anarchy and live under an absolutist state power.  What are the limits of state power?
