Students may choose an area of addiction that interests them. This is a research
assignment which will require exploring both addiction and community resources. You
may include our course resources and will need to look beyond. Some of the research may
be academic in nature i.e. articles/textbooks and some may be more popular e.g. reliable
websites and governmental/community agencies/organizations.

In the essay “Panopticism,” Michel Foucault analyzes a model of a prison, developed by Jeremy Bentham, to explore questions of surveillance, visibility, discipline, and self-discipline. In the essay “How Censorship Works,” the Chinese artist A Weiwei writes about censorship and self-censorship in China. Write an essay in which you analyze the similarities between Panopticism and the situation in China that Weiwei describes. What insight can we come to by thinking about these texts together?
