Reflect on whether or not you believe there is a disability culture

The argument presented in chapter 12 states that anthropologically speaking, there cannot be a disability culture, because disable people are parts of other cultures (ethnic, race, gender). I think the author makes a good point toward the end of the section in that this is like saying women are not an individual culture, because they fall into specific ethnic and racial groups. I think a disability culture is created by the way that disabled are often grouped together and treated the same in our country. For example, a person with stroke and a person with TBI are very different in terms of physical disability. However, many people will refer to both of these individuals as “crippled” or “slow” or even “retarted” and treat them similarly. Due to this treatment, I think the stroke and TBI patients both feel they have something in common (even though they may not have anything in common socially or prior to injury), and thus, a disability culture is created.

This is a very good question that made me think. There are many different definitions of culture as the text mentions but there are key points that are similar between the definitions. These key points include 1) learned behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values, 2) learned as a result of group interaction, and 3) learned via socialization rather than from a teaching process.1 The text also makes a few great points 1) culture varies based upon region and 2) individuals may associate with more than one culture.1 If culture was defined by region only, then I would say no, there is not a disability culture. However, because disabled individuals have lived through similar challenges, discrimination, and hardships, I do believe they have learned specific behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values. Not only have these behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, and values been learned individually, but they have been learned as a group through socialization. That leads me to believe that yes, there is a disability culture.
