Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “The Cry of the Children” was written in protest of the conditions children faced working in the mines of Great Britain and in an effort to draw attention to their plight. There is a long history of poetry being used to protest a variety of issues. Do some research/exploration and find a modern example of a protest poem. Poetry Foundation and Poetry.org, the site for the Academy of American poets, are both sites you could potentially use. Once you’ve found your poem that you want to use, answer the following questions: 1- Include in your post a copy of the poem, 2- When was the poem written and what is it in protest of, 3- Was this style of poetry commonly used by the author, 4- What made you choose this poem? How/why did it speak to you and 5- Do you think this poem made a difference in the issue it was written about?

What is disembedding (as described by Capek)? What does it have to do with the structures created within capitalism? Do you think Aldo Leopolds Land Ethic or the indigenous land ethics weve read about can challenge the negative consequences of disembedding and our current mode of organizing economy and society? When describing our current mode of organizing economy and society, think about using environmental sociology concepts we learned about in class if you can (such as the double-edged nature of science from York, Treadmill of Production, Ecological Marxism, Risk Society etc).
