Choose one visual image, and write a detailed analysis of the visual effect of the image, or the message it sends, and the visual strategies utilized to send this message. Choose an image that you feel really interests you or that provoked a strong response. Once you have viewed the image multiple times and described what you see in-depth, you are then ready to draft your essay. Write a four-page analysis of the image that situates it in its context, defines its visual purpose, sets up its audience, and evaluates how effectively this image makes its argument or point. Analyze the image using the concepts that we have been working with—genre, visual features (font, color, organization), purpose, context, and audience, and visual meaning—and think about how the image develops a particular effect or argument. Remember, you cannot possibly cover all of the visual elements and rhetorical strategies that we have discussed, so choose only the major concept or strategy that you feel is most important.
