Do you think we should allow genetic modification of the germline in the US?

The newly developing CRISPR technique allows scientists to cut out a detrimental gene and insert healthy DNA, thereby altering the genetic code of that individual cell. If this mutation occurs in a germ cell (gametes, sperm or egg), it would carry through to every cell in the body and descend in successive generations. The CRISPR technique has the potential to eliminate devastating genetic diseases such as Tay-Sachs, cystic fibrosis or Huntington’s disease, however, many in the scientific community oppose human germline modification on the basis of ethical consequences. Regardless of these concerns, it has already begun. China is leading in this research, where scientists began experimentation on a nonviable human embryo in 2015. The United States has not officially prohibited germline modification, although the NIH Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee explicitly states that it “will not at present entertain proposals for germ line alterations”. Do you think we should allow genetic modification of the germline in the US? Consider if you, your child or a family member carried a devastating genetic disease that could potentially be eliminated using CRISPR, does this change your answer? Should we be concerned with the possibility of building a eugenic society (think Gattaca)? What about designer babies?

Was American society more or less democratic after the war than during the late colonial period?

American Revolution Impact .As divided as historians are over the causes of the American Revolution (1775-1783), they are in even greater disagreement over its consequences. In one camp are those who assert that the Revolution was ″the most radical and most far-reaching event in American history,″ while their opponents claim that it was ″culturally, politically, socially, and economically a conservative movement.″ This disagreement, in part, is the product of varying views of what constitutes a revolution. After reading the assigned article, decide for yourself whether the American Revolution was truly revolutionary or not. As you argue YOUR point of view, be sure to cite the assigned article as well as two other historical sources to support your key points. Some important question you might address as you build your argument include: How do you define revolution? Was American society more or less democratic after the war than during the late colonial period? Did the Patriot leaders and their middle- and lower-class followers have different or similar goals for the Revolution? Did all people in American society experience the same benefits–politically, economically and socially–as a result of the Revolution?
