What is the effect of hand washing on infection control compared to using hand sanitizers?

Hospitals worldwide use evidence-based practice daily to continue to save lives and provide outstanding patient care. In recent clinical experience at my hospital, they have been encouraging the use of hand sanitizer as you walk in a patient’s room and as you walk out as well. “Foam in and foam out” is the phrase I hear daily at work. EBP/ Clinical Experience The spread of infections in hospitals can be a significant problem. It can lead to more extended hospital stays and unfortunately some cases have caused death. “Standard precautions are used for all patient care. They’re based on a risk assessment and make use of common-sense practices and personal protective equipment use that protect healthcare providers from infection and spread of infection from patient to patient” (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). Based on the evidence, using hand sanitizer as you walk inside a patient’s room and outside lowers the rate of infection throughout the hospital. During the EPIC Systematic Review 2001, “it showed that 70% alcohol or an alcohol-based antiseptic hand rub provides the most effective decontamination for a wide variety of organisms” (Stone, 2001). Healthcare workers don’t always stop and use soap and water when entering and leaving a patient’s room so having these sanitizers at the door helps remind the worker and family members to do hand hygiene. Fortunately, the policy at my hospital supports this evidence-based practice. They recently installed hand sanitizers at each door to promote the use
