You look up from your desk and once again see Joan, the CEO, pacing back and forth in front of your door before finally coming into your office. The CEO advises you that the meeting last week with the Board went great but feels that she needs a greater understanding of how to cut and control costs, as mergers and acquisitions are an expensive undertaking. The CEO asks that you keep your research findings completely confidential because if word leaked out, it could negatively affect morale and slow down production at Venus Widgets.

The CEO has tasked you with exploring the implications of offshoring and outsourcing on some of the company’s operations in an attempt to streamline and save money.

This week for your project, please discuss the following:

• Discuss strategies that could be implemented as part of an outsourcing and offshoring plan to help streamline functions of the company and save money.
• As part of the exploration and developing strategies process for offshoring and outsourcing, the CEO would like for you to focus on the HR department.

develop a working hypothesis, building on the research topic you have chosen. Remember that once you have identified a research question, you will propose some plausible explanation (answer to the question), which may turn out to be true or not. The point of this exercise is to identify some independent variables that lead to a dependent variable, which lead you to put a hypothesis into words.

The purpose for identifying a working hypothesis is to develop an assumption based on your preliminary research and then identify the variables that you will analyze to produce an empirical analysis. Sometimes there are two competing hypotheses and the key is to discover which answer is more correct through your research.

For example, if my research question was: What are the conditions that lead to the proliferation of demonstrations in Arab countries? and my preliminary research indicated that there was high unemployment among the young, discontent with the political process, poverty, I would diagram my variables like this:

IV + IV + IV = DV
Unemployment + discontent + poverty = popular demonstrations

From there, I might develop a simple hypothesis:

High rates of unemployment among the young, discontent with the political process, and poverty common to many of the Arab Spring nations contributed to widespread unrest and demonstrations.

However, a person could come up with another explanation for the same dependent variable: popular demonstrations.

Political Repression + Censorship + Extremist Agitation = Popular Demonstrations

For this assignment you are to develop one working hypothesis or, if more applicable for your topic, two alternative explanations for the same observed or predicted phenomenon. If the alternative explanations (hypotheses) are mutually exclusive of each other, only one of the explanations can be correct. You should provide a short review of the sources that pertain to your topic to enable the reader to see how you arrived at this working hypothesis.

3. Look for ways you could respond to the prompt and mark passages you could use as evidence in support of a thesis.
4. Brainstorm a thesis and evidence for your essay. Use all prewriting techniques you find helpful.
5. Narrow your thesis and organize your evidence.
6. Write your rough draft.
7. Revise your draft for content and clarity.

8.    Write a final draft. It should be 2-4 pages (double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font).

 

 

Things to keep in mind

 

• Come up with a thesis and the evidence you need to support it, before you begin writing.

 

• This thesis must be specific and arguable: don’t state the obvious.

 

• Support your thesis with a close reading and analysis of the texts. Refer to and quote the texts when presenting your evidence.

 

• Organize your evidence into paragraphs that each have one controlling idea. Sum up this idea with a topic sentence.

 

• Make sure your sentences are linked with clear transitions.

 

• Make sure your summary recounts your thesis and your supporting arguments.

 

 

Essay Question

 

Write an essay addressing the following prompt.

 

Though these two essays about binge drinking address the same topic, they’re very different. One is a scientific article published in a medical journal, and the other is a persuasive essay published in an educator’s journal. Analyze the differences between the two, and show how these differences reflect the purpose and intended audience of each piece. Consider tone, the types of evidence used, the proportion between evidence and persuasive devices, and which rhetorical strategies each piece relies on most.

 

What are the major social problems afflicting ghettoized neighborhoods? Why are they more common in these areas?
