For decades, the US has engaged in an era of mass incarceration. However, this mass incarceration has disproportionately affected a small number of neighborhoods. Why do some neighborhoods have such high incarceration rates? What impact might high levels of neighborhood incarceration have on families, social ties, neighborhood social cohesion and crime? Eric Codora argues that resources used to incarcerate individuals in “Million Dollar Blocks” could be reallocated. Should some of these resources be redirected? Why or why not?
