Define the central theme of “Harrison Bergeron.” Is Vonnegut’s early 1960’s vision of the future still relevant today? Why or why not?

Write a short essay  that defends a thesis you developed through a close critical reading/analysis of one (or two) works listed on the syllabus. The “critical response” essay relies on textual support from the primary text (secondary sources are not required) – not plot summary to develop the student’s argument. Do not confuse “critical analysis” with “plot summary”; the goal is to develop, sustain, and advance a thesis based on a critique of the primary text. Define the central theme of “Harrison Bergeron.” Is Vonnegut’s early 1960’s vision of the future still relevant today? Why or why not?

Research and examine in more detail several aspects of working with people that present with a disability.

Building upon the research from your annotated bibliography you will research and examine in more detail several aspects of working with people that present with a disability. You could examine how lack of accommodation, inadequate social policy/program responses, issues of poverty, society oppression, myths, stereotypes and/or service delivery considerations such as lack of housing, transportation, day supports and/or inadequate assessment and treatment services often impacts and contributes to the complexity of needs and service situations these individuals often experience in their lives.

In this paper you will address the following points:

why this is a social issue for this specific group of people with a
disability; how are they affected; how do the areas or factors you have chosen to examine intersect with each other and what are the social, political and economic forces contributing to and perpetuating many of the problems these individuals are experiencing. You should also include an examination of the differing perspectives on the issue (e.g. government and an advocacy group), and media coverage. Your
analysis of the issue will incorporate what you have learned from a range of outside sources including your annotated bibliography and critical article review assignment. Where possible, your research
should include materials that give voice to or identify the experiences of those who are affected by this social issue.
