Demonstrate critical reading of two short novels • Apply textual and contextual analytical skills • The comparison should be based on how the two books (Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl and Uncle Tom’s Cabin) and/or authors (Jacobs and Stowe) are representative of American gender and politics, the minority voice, marginalization, or the power of rhetoric. Be sure to apply textual (literary) elements (setting, plot, character, theme, imagery, foreshadowing, irony, etc.), contextual (history and culture) elements, and a critical theory such as Feminist, Psychological, Marxist, New Historicist, Historical/Biographical, or Archetypal to help support your thesis. You will submit and discuss, either in “live” virtual conferences or email proposed topics. You will then have to solidify your topic in an instructor approved manner. Coming up with topic will require you to use texts covered in class, your own critical skills, and preliminary resear Research After you have had your topic approved, you will begin the process of researching the issue. It is expected that students will use academic and credible sources. Students will use college/university libraries, Databases, and Google Scholar. Before beginning research you will have developed a trailhead question, and the research will help answer that question. Organization Once you have your initial research, you will be able to develop a thesis and organize the major contents of the paper.
