A “What Did You Notice” journal is different from a typical journal because it pairs introspection with community research. Each week you will be given a prompt that will ask you to explore a different genre of folklore in a different medium. This week’s assignment looks only at Wolf tales. Choose any Wolf story, The Three Little Piggies, The movie “The Werewolf”, .Little Red Riding Hood, Romulus and Remus, Give yourself 45 minutes to completely immerse yourself in the piece of folklore. Then, write about 250 words answering the question: “what did you notice?” Your answer should include the source(s) that you found, observations you made, how you reacted to the sources and observations, your analysis of them, and your personal thoughts on the activity. Below are the specific activities for each week: Choose any Wolf related tale from literature or film, or poetry. Do not retell the story (you can give a one sentence synopsis. Discuss its putative origin, variations, and moral. Why does it exist? Who is the audience? What does it teach? Who cares? Is its existence indicative of a strength of the tale? Who told it originally? Which origin theory is the most likely (Primitive, Elite survival or original peasant tale?). Is the wolf hero or villain? Does the wolf interact with others? How, why and what does it all mean? Are their non lupine variants?
