Colonialism
There were three main motives for colonialism in the late nineteenth century: economic dominance, the so-called “civilizing” mission, and international prestige. After reading Chapter 6 and viewing The Colonization of Africa (Links to an external site.), use specific examples from India, South East Asia, or Africa, address the following items:
Assess how these motives were used and how the different motives complemented and conflicted with each other.
Examine the justifications of these practices for colonization and the role of race.
Jean-François Klein discusses the French use of what Europeans termed “pacification” campaigns. After reading “Pacification”, an Imperial-Process (Links to an external site.), explain what this term meant in the context of colonization, and how Europeans, who were relatively small in number, were able to conquer such vast areas of land and peoples?
After reading Chapter 6 Section 4 in the course textbook and African Resistance to Colonial Rule (Links to an external site.), explain some of the ways local people could and did resist colonialism.
Referring to Chapter 6 Section2 in the course textbook, what role did gender play in Empire and Colonialism?
Assess the impact of colonialism on the local inhabitants. What benefits did colonialism bring and what were the negative impacts?
Topic B: The Palestine Mandate and French and British Mandate System in the Middle East
One of the often overlooked consequences of WWI was the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, which had lasted since 1299. In many ways, we are still living with the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire’s collapse. Refer to Chapter 7 Section 1 in the course textbook, and the following required resources.

Examine how British and French management of former Ottoman territories impacted the Middle East, including Palestine.
Assess the impact of the Ottoman Empire’s collapse and that of the British and French divisions of Ottoman territories.
Assess the impact of this history on the events we see today.
